The Lord in the Clouds

Qu Yuan

Bathing and lingering

Welcome the radiance and wish it would stay.

Scented water, bright clothes and graceful dancing prepare a brilliant arrival; words of rest slow the moment.

浴兰汤兮沐芳,华采衣兮若英。

We bathe in fragrant lan water, wash our hair with perfume, and wear bright robes adorned with ruò blossoms.

灵连蜷兮既留,烂昭昭兮未央。

The ritual dancer turns gracefully; the spirit has come to rest, shining with undiminished radiance.

謇将憺兮寿宫,与日月兮齐光。

You linger serenely in the spirit's hall, your brilliance matching sun and moon.

龙驾兮帝服,聊翱游兮周章。

Driving dragons in noble robes, you soar awhile and travel round the world.

Passage in brief

The spirit's lingering is momentary; the beauty of arrival sharpens the later loss.
