The auspicious hour and fragrant offerings
Prepare both the self and the gifts.
The chosen hour, jade fittings, fine mat and scented food make ready a reverent welcome.
吉日兮辰良,穆将愉兮上皇。
On an auspicious day, at a fine hour, we reverently seek to gladden the supreme spirit.
抚长剑兮玉珥,璆锵鸣兮琳琅。
I touch the long sword's jade fittings; my jade pendants ring clear against one another.
瑶席兮玉瑱,盍将把兮琼芳。
A splendid mat is laid, its corners weighted with jade; let us hold fragrant offerings in our hands.
蕙肴蒸兮兰藉,奠桂酒兮椒浆。
We offer dishes scented with hui, laid upon lan, and set out cinnamon wine and pepper cordial.
Jade chimes and fragrance give the rite sensory depth and prepare its gathering of voices.
