Divination
Traditionally attributed to Qu Yuan
The visit and the question
Explain the uncertainty, then ask for judgement.
Exile, slander and confusion establish the need; arranged stalks and a brushed shell prepare the paired choices.
A human recitation has not been added for this poem yet.
屈原既放,三年不得复见。竭知尽忠而蔽障于谗。心烦虑乱,不知所从。乃往见太卜郑詹尹曰:“余有所疑,愿因先生决之。”
After his banishment, Qu Yuan had not seen the ruler for three years. His wisdom and loyalty were blocked by slander. Distressed and confused, he did not know which course to take. He went to the chief diviner Zheng Zhanyin and said, 'I have doubts and hope you will decide them for me.'
詹尹乃端策拂龟,曰:“君将何以教之?”
Zhanyin arranged the yarrow stalks, brushed the turtle shell, and asked, 'What would you have me consider?'
The problem is how to stand between integrity and conformity, already exceeding a simple forecast of fortune.
